Winter's Bone

Themes:

  • Family - Ree has to look after her two younger siblings in absence of her father. She goes to find her father and goes as far as cutting off his hands to save her family home. 
  • Relationships - There are many characters who all have relations to one another in some way. Because of the small rural community they are part of, everyone knows everyone.
  • Violence - Ree gets beaten, people aren't afraid to defend whats theirs. People are seen holding knives and blades. Ree also has to cut her fathers hands off. 
  • Secrecy - No one is happy about talking to authority and everyone keeps their own business to themselves. 
Mise en Scene:
  • Rural community and nature, a lot of the film is based outside, the location of the film is in the Ozark mountains, Missouri. 
  • The costumes used are from the area, the film makers also did a 'clothes swap' with members of the local community to get the authentic, rustic looking clothes. The cast of the film are all seen wearing similar coloured clothes. 
  • The film used very little lighting techniques and relied mainly on natural lighting to filmiest scenes. this helps the realistic effect that the film holds all throughout. 
Independant film - Low budget ($2 million), unknown actors.

Pan's Labyrinth Analysis

The opening scene of Pan's Labyrinth starts with a shot of darkness this is then followed by the camera panning up to show Ofelia who is lay on the ground covered in blood, it shows her death which is filmed in reverse. This creates a sense of enigma for the audience and by showing the ending of the film in the opening scene, gives it a circular narrative. We then start to hear a narrative that gives us some information on what the storyline is about, at the same time, the camera zooms in on Ofelia's eye to cut to the next shot. The use of eyes  is  a recurring motif throughout this film to represent the type of world they live in – one where they see things but cannot say anything because of the fascist society . Evaluation

My film, Vendetta, although not being a huge success, did have its good points. I feel as though Vendetta contained some interesting themes and some well thought out shots, such as the pan of the graves and the pan along the medicine bottle. Key themes such as mental illness and death were included, although they could have been worked on. I felt my group lacked frequent communication, and our film suffered because of this. A lot of the shots were not81 as we planned in the story board because of a lack of resources, time and maybe even drive. If I had the chance to re do my film, I would make sure my group organised meet ups for filming, make sure every shot was to a certain standard and spend more time getting used to editing software and actually editing the film.

The Place Beyond The Pines Analysis

The first part of this scene in ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ starts with an establishing shot of a fair ground, whilst we see this shot we can hear the narrative of the two characters talking, the scene then switches to a close up of a man talking so we can establish who is talking. This shot is eye level and has very neutral lighting, we get a shot reverse shot of Ryan Gosling and the other man talking, all at eye level to make the audience feel as if they are part of the conversation. The camera also looks handheld to add to this. The scene then switches to an extreme long shot of Luke (Ryan Gosling) riding a motorcycle, the camera follows him with a tracking shot and uses high key lighting because he is outside. The next shot is an over shoulder, mid shot of him knocking at the door.
