Enrolment Task - Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman

The film I have chosen to analyse is ‘Wonder woman’, this a new film which came out recently this year. It's about an island of women who are there to protect, a man comes to the island and tells them about the war going on, wonder woman believes she can help because she is the strongest on her island. She goes back to the normal world to help fight in the war. One of the first main sequences in the film is the first fight scene when the Germans come to the paradise island. This is a key sequence because it is what sets the scene and the storyline for the rest of the film. This particular scene starts with a plane falling from the sky into the ocean, this is enjoyable because it creates tension. There’s smoke coming from the plane and we can see that someone is in the plane when it crash lands into the ocean so this gives us a sense of danger. This then follows with wonder woman (Diana) jumping into the sea to save the man as he struggles to get out of the plane, he is unable to free himself so he becomes unconscious. Diana swims up to him, saves him and swims him to shore. This scene is tense and keeps viewers watching because it intrigues you to see whether he is alive or not. Once the man regains consciousness, they can see that he has been followed by some Germans, the other women on the island can see this and prepare themselves for battle. A fight scene takes place and this defines who the protagonist is, Diana; she beats impossible odds by managing to kill all the Germans, she is followed by a closed narrative and she does what she can to help the other women in battle. This sequence is important to the film because it helps us identify the protagonist and antagonist (the Germans), also known as binary opposites. Also from this sequence we get a greater understanding of Diana’s motive and decisions later on in the film. This sequence is also enjoyable to the audience because of the way it has been edited, it uses fast edits and loud, fast paced music to raise tension - one of the main themes in an action film.

The second key sequence of the film is when Diana finally manages to get in the front lines of the war, she is told that there is nothing that she can do to stop the war but she ignores this, puts on her suit and proceeds to go across no mans land. Her putting on her suit is quite significant because it shows she is the hero through the use of mise en scene. The hero always has a specific costume or prop that is unique to them. After she puts on her suit, she climbs up the trenches and we get a slow motion clip of her walking, this gives the scene a sense of relief because this shows that she is going to help and save the day. As she walks across no mans land, she beats all impossible odds by dodging all bullets coming at her despite the fact that the Germans are using machine guns to shoot at her. She single-handedly defeats all the Germans in the trenches by using her power of strength. Her and the other men then go into the town and defeat all the Germans there, most of this she does by herself. In these scenes we see a lot of slow motion to show in detail how she fights off so many people at once, we also get lots of flash edits to make everything look more chaotic and exciting, this is a main edit used to show a fight in action films. At the end once she has defeated all the Germans she stands on top of the ruins of a building that she has destroyed and she is applauded by a crowd of people below her. This is also a very obvious factor which shows she is the hero.

This film is enjoyable to me because it is filled with fight scenes and is action filled. I also enjoy it because it uses a female lead who is the hero, this is something we don't see very often in action adventure films.
